Sand Depth Guide for Pavers, Pools & Sandboxes
Correct depth specifications and sand grain selections ensure long-lasting paver stability, child-safe sandboxes, and tear-free pool liners.
| Project Application | Recommended Depth | Recommended Sand Type | Pro Contractor Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Interlocking Paver Bedding | 1 Inch (Uniform) | Coarse Concrete Sand (ASTM C33) | Never exceed 1.5 inches of bedding sand. Screed smoothly over compacted base rock without compacting the sand first. |
| Above-Ground Pool Pad & Cove | 2 to 3 Inches | Washed Fine Mason Sand | Tamp a 6-inch high angled perimeter sand cove around the inside pool wall to prevent the vinyl liner from slipping under the bottom rail. |
| Children's Play Sandbox | 4 to 6 Inches | Certified Washed White Play Sand | Line the sandbox bottom with permeable landscaping fabric to allow rainwater drainage while preventing native mud from mixing into clean sand. |
| Polymeric Paver Joint Locking | Full Joint Depth (~1.5" - 2.5") | Polymeric Sand (Fine or Wide-Joint) | Sweep all excess polymeric dust off paver chamfers with a leaf blower before misting with water to prevent hazy polymer residue staining. |
| Volleyball Court / Horseshoe Pit | 8 to 12 Inches | Sub-angular Silica Beach Sand | Install perforated drain tiles underneath to prevent standing puddle water after heavy seasonal storms. |
How to Calculate Sand by Hand
Calculate your sand volume, tonnage, and 50 lb bags with this standard landscape engineering formula.
Square Footage
Length × Width in feet.
20 ft × 10 ft = 200 sq ft
Cubic Feet Volume
Depth in inches divided by 12.
200 × (1 ÷ 12) = 16.67 cu ft
Cubic Yards
Divide cubic feet by 27.
16.67 ÷ 27 = 0.62 cu yds
Tons & 50 lb Bags
Tons = Yds × 1.35 | Bags = Cu Ft ÷ 0.5
0.83 Tons (~34 bags)
The Dry Sand Density Factor (1.35 Tons/Yd³)
One cubic yard of dry concrete or mason sand averages 2,700 lbs (1.35 short tons). If the sand is damp or wet from morning rain, weight can reach up to 3,000 lbs per cubic yard!
Bulk Sand Delivery vs. 50 lb Bags
Should you order bulk dump truck delivery from a landscape quarry or pick up bagged sand at Home Depot or Lowe's?
Bulk Dump Truck Delivery
Washed concrete sand or mason sand delivered by dump truck and dropped directly onto your driveway.
- Massive Savings: Bulk sand averages $30 - $55 per yard vs $250+ equivalent in 50 lb bags.
- Consistent Moisture & Grade: Quarry-screened ASTM C33 sand ensures uniform compaction under pavers.
- No Plastic Trash: Avoid tearing open and disposing of 50 to 100+ heavy plastic sacks.
- Delivery fees typically range from $45 to $85. Requires covering with a tarp before rain.
50 lb Bags (0.5 Cu. Ft.)
Pre-packaged bags of play sand, paver sand, or all-purpose sand available at local home improvement centers.
- Convenient Handling: Easily transport 5 to 10 bags in a car trunk or pickup bed.
- Bone-Dry Storage: Sealed plastic bags keep sand dry for easy screeding and polymeric joint filling.
- Certified Play Sand: Packaged play sand is washed, sanitized, and certified free of silica dust.
- Expensive for large patios ($4.75/bag = ~$256/yd). Strenuous lifting and handling.
